To achieve a shine that is comparable to that of marble or granite, you have to grind the surface with diamond discs of progressively finer grits. As these surfaces are often rough, it is necessary to begin with a disc that is embedded with coarse diamonds. This should be able to remove pits and blemishes from the surface. The next steps involve the use of discs with grits that are increasingly finer. Part of the difficulty of concrete floor polishing is deciding when to change discs. The surface has to be of a certain texture before the change is made. A high level of gloss can be attained with diamond grits rated at 1500 up to 3500. At this level, top coating is not even necessary for the shine to appear.
Both new and old cement surface can be subjected to this kind of grinding to attain a desired level of luster. New structures need only to be cured for a minimum of 28 days before grinding. Older ones, on the hand, must be cleaned of dirt, blemishes, grease, or coatings.
